Just say NO to FRAMES

Snatch that backpack

There are a number of things here that may be of interest. Have a look through, take what you want and leave the rest.

Hot items

Grab the mythical DM7 map that never made it into the original version of Quake as released by id.

What is it? Well, it's Quake, translated into French. Once you've read up on it, you can download a copy for yourself.

Maps

Download Party Time (242Kb), a map built by our dear friend Buzz. It's big and there are lots of weapons and ammunition. Well suited towards all out deathmatches, as well as teamplay. Was previously known as "Buzz 5".

Download The Bridge (245Kb), a delighful map built by our dear friend Qhro, a.k.a Schmurlf.

Download Panic in pain v1.0 (112Kb), a low-gravity deathmatch-only map, a replacement for Ziggurat Vertigo. To that end, the following commands should be executed before playing in the map:

sv_gravity 260;sv_friction 2.6
It may be worthwhile to bind this to an unused key, e.g., bind "i" "sv_gravity...". This happens automatically if you use the French Conversion Pack.

Note that this map will not work on Quakeworld servers (thanks for the tip DaNoLd), as the gravity cannot be modified (not sure if this is a server limitation or simply that people choose not to)...

Actually, it is quite possible to run this map in a normal gravity environment, but your kneecaps really suffer. (And the only way to get the rocket launcher is via a grenade jump). Check out the soon-to-be-included insane demo (I left it behind) against a pair of ReaperBots.

The Death Mill v2.3Download The Death Mill, version 2.3 (307Kb). This is a complete rewrite of version 1. A lot of effort has gone into keeping the number of surfaces, edges and textures (only 13 used!) as low as possible for high frame rates and small BSP file size (but it's still pretty big: the BSP file clocks in at 741Kb). This map is designed for lots of players: if you're less than six you'll spend a lot of time looking for frags. This map really only comes into its own with ten or more players. Indeed, there are 27 (!) deathmatch spawn locations, so you shouldn't get telefragged too often.

I am currently thinking about v2.4. Too much lag with twelve players.

The Reaperbot v0.81.
If you want to play in deathmatches with other people, you should practice against one or more Reaperbots. There are a couple of bugs in their behaviour, but they don't degrade performance like a couple of other bots I've tried. The author, Steven Polge, hasn't issued a new version for a long time... maybe sometime in the future I'll recommend a different bot... but for the time being, this is the one to have. According to the documentation, I have the permission to distribute it here. So here's a copy, just in case you can't find it elsewhere.

The Quake Truetype fonts.
Been seeing those fonts everywhere? You can get 'em here.
